I still remember the days before we sold shoes at Little Bigheads. Shopping for school shoes was something I absolutely dreaded.
One of my girls had very narrow feet and nothing ever seemed to fit; the other was so heavy‑footed she could destroy a pair within weeks of term starting.
The back‑to‑school rush felt like a free‑for‑all
A real‑life version of the Motherland back-to-school scene (every parent knows the one). Stressful, expensive, and never the ending to summer you hope for.

Then in 2016, something happened that changed everything.
After my mum passed away late that August, buying school shoes wasn’t exactly top of my list. I went to our nearest high‑street family shoe shop in early September, hoping to get my girls sorted quickly.
Instead, I was met with eye‑rolling, a lecture about being “too late”, and left ten minutes later with two of the most expensive pairs in the shop — told they weren’t a great fit, but they would “have to do”. I walked out feeling small, embarrassed, and certain there had to be a better way.
💡And that’s when the idea arrived:
What if Little Bigheads — known for children’s hairdressing — also became a place where families could get properly fitted children’s shoes, without the stress?
We had the space. We had the families. And once I get an idea in my head, that’s it (thank you, ADHD brain).
The next few months were a whirlwind:
- A fitting and footwear course with the Society of Shoefitters
- Hours of research into every children’s shoe brand on the market
- Deep dives into children’s foot health
- Planning how to create a calmer, kinder, more supportive experience for parents
The Concept Was Simple
- Good old‑fashioned shoe fitting — every pair fitted properly
- A wide choice of brands and styles for every budget and lifestyle
- Strong stock levels all year round
- Optional 30‑minute appointments so you never have to wait
- Free fitting checks — come back as often as you need, and we’ll never sell you a pair you don’t need
Originally, shoes were meant to be in‑store only. Then the world had other plans (hello, Covid). So in 2020 we launched our shoe collections online too, with:
- Fit and sizing advice before you order
- A “Click & Fit” service — order online, collect in store, and have the fit checked by us

Ten Years Later
We’ve built an incredible reputation locally and further afield, and we couldn’t be prouder. Our shoe department is now as loved as our hairdressing team, and many families see us as their one‑stop shop for both.
